The Wylie girls soccer team dropped Monday’s weather delayed District 4-5A opener 3-0 to defending champion Lubbock Coronado.
In what was a strong performance for most of the 80 minutes for the Lady Bulldogs, they lacked the threat in the final third to create any scoring chances.
“It was really good to see them fight. They really gave it all out on the field,” Wylie interim head coach Gabby Symmank said. “We had a couple corners, so we had a couple corners which was nice to see. But definitely need more shots on goal … for sure.”
The Lady Bulldogs (3-5-2 overall, 0-1 district, 0 points) withstood the offensive pressure from Coronado for most of the first half without giving up a goal. The Lady Mustangs (1-0, 3 points) broke through with just over 10 minutes left in the first half, taking advantage of a second-straight corner kick.
Trailing just 1-0 at halftime had Wylie feeling good about the game. That quickly changed as Coronado scored within the first minute of the second half to double its lead before putting the game away with 18 minutes to play.
“After half we were feeling good, 1-0,” Symmank said. “We were like, ‘We’ve got this.’ That goal right off the bat took the girls’ spirits, you could tell. But they kept fighting.”
It was the first of three games this week, all with their challenges. After facing the defending district champions and favorites to win it again, Wylie will face in-town rival Cooper on Tuesday. Then, the Lady Bulldogs meet a district runner-up Lubbock Monterey team that beat them twice in the regular season only to win in the playoffs.
“Definitely trying to take it one game at a time,” Symmank said. “Especially having to go back and play tomorrow. We don’t have much time to watch film, so just making sure they rest. Then, Wednesday and Thursday, resting and watching film and getting ready for Monterey.”
