On senior night, the Vacaville High women’s soccer team defeated Will C. Wood, 2-0, Thursday at Tom Zunino Stadium to secure the Monticello Empire League title.
The Bulldogs’ first goal (15-6-1, 8-1-1) came on a pass from senior Sydney Boele to rookie Katie Thomas. The second goal then Boele scored the second goal later, being more than enough for the Bulldogs to claim victory.
Securing a title with her program, Jenn Eggley felt like the night went by like a blur, but was so happy her daughters accomplished the feat.
“It was pretty exciting, especially for the seniors,” Eggley said.
The Wildcats fell to 6-6-3 overall, 4-4-2 in the league.
The playoff draws for the Sac-Joaquin section are expected to come out over the weekend, the time and day have yet to be determined.
Vanden 0, Rodriguez 0
Vanden’s women’s soccer team (6-4-4) tied Rodriguez, 0-0, in Thursday’s MEL game.
The Vikings now land in the league standings at 4-2-4 and the Mustangs at 7-0-3.
Girls basketball
Vanden 67, Fairfield 25
Vanden’s women’s basketball team (17-3, 8-0) came home victorious from the road Thursday night, beating Fairfield, 67-25, Thursday in a game against MEL.
The Vikings were led in scoring by Alyssa Jackson with 19. Sophomore Mila Simmano scored eight and junior Gabby Wright scored seven.
“They came out a little slow yesterday, but they got it,” Vikings co-coach Jake Johnson III said of his team early on. “We started playing with a lot of energy.”
Wood 65, Armijo 24
Recovering from a loss earlier in the week, the Will C. Wood women’s basketball team (12-8, 5-3) defeated Armijo, 65-24, in MEL play.
The Wildcats were led in scoring by sophomore Natalia Sanchez and junior Kailei Gomez in scoring 14 each. Sophomore Lucia Alexander scored 13.
Wildcats head coach Matthew Lowry congratulates assistant coach AJ Walton as he serves his one-game suspension after committing two technical fouls against Rodriguez earlier in the week, and is ready for a week tough matches ahead.
“Now we have to prepare for another tough game with Vanden and Vacaville to get into the playoffs,” Lowry said. “We just have to stay true to our system.”
Rodriguez 88, Vacaville 45
In that game against MEL on Thursday, the Vacaville High women’s basketball team (8-11, 3-5) couldn’t hold off Rodriguez 88-45.
The Bulldogs were led by junior Brynlie Headrick with 17 points and eight rebounds and junior Lily Holman scored 10 points with four rebounds.
In the junior varsity game, the Bulldogs were on the winning side, beating the Mustangs, 60-32. Leading was Rylie Johnson with 23 and Kelsey Collins with 15.

Buckingham Charter 65, Sac County Day 33
In this Sacramento Metropolitan League game, the Buckingham Charter Knights men’s basketball team defeated Sacramento County Day, 65-33.
Senior Ernest Turner led the way in scoring for the Knights, scoring 31 points and 10 rebounds. Noah Mitchell scored 11 goals and grabbed four rebounds. Junior Nigel Harrison scored five and had seven rebounds.
Although pleased with the winning streak they’ve embarked on, Knights head coach Dan Curry is focused on the task at hand.
“Their goal is to make the playoffs,” Curry said. “Although we have won four games in a row, we have to win our next four games to achieve this goal.”
The junior college game had a similar result, when the Knights defeated the Cavaliers, 49-21 — led by Gio Carrasco’s efforts in picking up four 3-pointers and leading all scorers with 12 points.

Golden Sierra 1, Vacaville Christian 0
The Vacaville Christian Falcons (0-13) men’s soccer team failed to hold off the Golden Sierra Grizzlies, 1-0, in a Sierra Delta League game.
The Grizzlies improved their league record to 3-10-1 and the Falcons are now 0-13.
