SARASOTA — The defending Class 7A state champion Gulf Coast Sharks edged Riverview High 1-0 Thursday night at the Ram Bowl to win the Class 7A-District 8 title.
Defender Elio Eichelbaum clinched the victory for visiting Gulf Coast (16-4-2) scoring the first goal of his four-year career off a rebound in the 52nd minute.
Eichelbaum, a senior, entered Thursday night’s match with just one assist on the year but made the most of his opportunity on a counterattack when teammate Marcello Maffei’s shot ricocheted off the goalkeeper’s hands. The ball dropped right in front of him inside the box and Eichelbaum’s try skimmed off the goalkeeper’s fingers, bounced off the crossbar and into the back of the net.
