ADOT: Phoenix-area weekend highway travel advisory Sept. 23-26

Improvement projects on some Phoenix-area freeways will require lane closures or restrictions this weekend, Sept. 23-26, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT). A section of Interstate 10 eastbound in the East Valley and sections of the 303 loop in the West Valley will be closed.

Drivers should allow extra time and check alternate routes while the following scheduled weekend freeway restrictions are in place along Phoenix area freeways:

  • I-10 toward is closed between US 60 (Superstition Freeway) and Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) from 10 p.m. Friday, September 23 to 4 a.m. Monday, September 19 for paving as part of the improvement project off the I-10 curve off Broadway. The westbound US 60 ramp to eastbound I-10 is closed. The eastbound I-10 on-ramps at 40th Street and Broadway Road are also closed. The eastbound I-10 on-ramp at Chandler Boulevard will remain open. US 60 eastbound exit and on-ramps at Mill Avenue are closed. Both HOV lane ramps at the I-10/US 60 interchange are closed. Detour: The alternate highway route to avoid this closure is Loop 202 eastbound (Red Mountain Highway) to Loop 101 southbound (Price Highway) and Loop 202 westbound (Santan Highway) in the Chandler area. Drivers can also use I-10 in the West Valley to the southbound 202 Loop (South Mountain Freeway) to reach I-10 beyond the closure. Eastbound I-10 drivers approaching closure can detour onto US 60 eastbound, southbound Loop 101, and westbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway). Southbound SR 143 traffic entering eastbound I-10 will be diverted to eastbound US 60. Note: Northbound 40th Street is closed between Broadway Road and I-10. Take a detour on 48th Street/SR 143 northbound to University Drive westbound.

  • Loop 303 northbound closed between Van Buren Street (south of I-10) and Happy Valley Parkway from 10 p.m. Friday, September 23 to 8 p.m. Saturday, September 24 for pavement sealing. Both I-10 ramps to the northbound 303 loop are closed. Detour: Consider using the 101 loop northbound as an alternate freeway route. Note: Crews plan to reopen northbound sections of the 303 Loop as they work north to south on pavement sealing.

  • Southbound 303 loop closed between Happy Valley Parkway and I-10 from 10 p.m. Saturday, September 24 to 8 p.m. Sunday, September 25 for pavement sealing. The Southbound Loop 303 on-ramp at Jomax Parkway is also closed. Detour: Consider using local streets to Loop 101 southbound (alternate freeway route). Note: Crews plan to reopen southbound sections of the 303 Loop as they work south to north on pavement sealing.

  • I-17 reduced to two lanes (left lanes closed) in both directions between Dunlap and Peoria avenues from 10 p.m. Friday, September 23 to 5 a.m. Monday, September 26 for construction project-related center barrier wall work of the Valley Metro Light Rail Bridge. Detour: Allow extra travel time and be prepared to slow down and merge safely as you approach and pass through all work areas.

  • Westbound I-10 is reduced to one lane near Watson Road in Buckeye from 9 p.m. Friday, September 23 to 4 p.m. Saturday, September 24 and from 9 p.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Sunday, September 25 for the proposed widening of the highway. Detour: Allow extra travel time and be prepared to slow down and merge safely as you approach and pass through all work areas.

ADOT plans and constructs new freeways, additional lanes, and other improvements in the Phoenix area as part of the regional transportation plan for the Maricopa County area. The projects are funded in part by Proposition 400, a dedicated sales tax approved by Maricopa County voters in 2004.

Real-time road conditions are available on ADOT’s Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov.
