I’ve always had sensitive skin, due to a condition called dermatography that causes my skin to twitch when it comes in contact with just about anything from makeup brushes to exfoliating beads. The physical pressure and chemical ingredients cause my skin to flare up. Although the welts don’t hurt, they attract unwanted attention and questions from people unaware of my condition, so I do my best to avoid them by relying on a handful of products that keep my skin hydrated and smooth without cause unnecessary irritation.

There’s a lot more where that came from. Sign up for our weekly newsletter to receive all our reviews, expert advice, offers and more.

If you too have sensitive skin or are looking for gentle formulas in your beauty products for some reason, I hope my must-haves will work well for your routine, whatever your skin concerns.

1. Burt’s Bee Nourishing Baby Lotion

I love the lavender scent of Burt's Bees Nourishing Baby Lotion.

Most of the time when I buy a skincare product at a grocery store or drugstore, I start by looking in the baby section. Babies have fragile skin and therefore the products intended for them are intended to be gentle, avoiding irritating ingredients or fragrances. One of my best finds in the baby section is Burt’s Bees Nourishing Baby Lotion. It’s made with moisturizing ingredients, like sunflower seed oil and shea butter, and it claims to have a hypoallergenic formula. I use the lotion all over my body almost daily and enjoy its soothing lavender scent. Although thick in consistency, the lotion spreads well and lasts me months at a time. It’s a lifesaver when my skin is dry.

2. Cocokind Texture Smoothing Cream

Cocokind Texture Smoothing Serum leaves my skin smooth and hydrated.

I have reviewed Cocokind products in the past and still happily use the Texture Smoothing Cream as a daily face moisturizer. The formula is lightweight and absorbs quickly, adding moisture to my skin that lasts all day. Its cucumber fruit water and squalane moisturize my skin well and avoid feelings of dryness or itching. I also got used to the fresh scent of peppermint and celery seeds. I use this moisturizer morning and night after washing my face with Osea Ocean cleanser and using any serum, allowing the serums time to absorb before “locking” them in with the richness of this moisturizer.

3. BeachPlease Luminous Tinted Balm

I don't need a makeup brush to blend Tower 28 BeachPlease Balm.

It can be hard to find makeup that doesn’t irritate my skin, especially because just applying products can cause redness and welts. I generally only wear makeup that can be blended into the skin with my hand, as opposed to brushes, and that’s where Tower 28’s BeachPlease Balm won me over. The balm can be used as an eye, lip, and cheek color, and it doesn’t feel heavy or greasy upon application or throughout wear. The balm is pigmented enough to add color to my skin with a thin layer, and it’s super smooth to rub onto the apples of my cheeks without irritation.

4. Osea Undaria Algae Body Oil

This oil from Osea prevents my skin from getting itchy after showering.

This body oil from Osea has been a game changer in my skincare routine. I dealt with itchiness on my back, arms and legs after exfoliating or scrubbing my skin in the shower before trying this. Now I follow a shower or bath with a few pumps of this oil to hydrate my skin and avoid the nasty itching completely. The formula contains a blend of many oils, including flaxseed, sunflower seed, rice bran, acai pulp and sesame seed. I love how soft and light this product is, and it leaves my skin glowing and soft without being greasy. I often use an oil pump after washing my hands to stop the dryness there too.

5. Floral nail file

Filing the nails can help reduce irritation.

My fingernails cause at least half of the breakouts and marks on my body. From accidental scratches to rabid itching, if my nails are sharp or ragged, the result is always worse. My defense has become a nail file in every purse or tote, at my desk, in the car, and even in my partner’s fanny pack in case I forget mine. I really like the Flowery 100/180 grit nail file for two reasons: First, its tapered shape is comfortable to use and allows me to file at an angle better than non-tapered rounded files. Second, the rough side can be used to soften a callus or torn nail to even out the shape and the 100 grit side can smooth out dull edges. These will come in handy if you find yourself scratching or itching at the skin, two habits that can irritate it.

6. Everyone Nourishing Hand and Body Lotion

Everyone's Nourishing Hand and Body Lotion has a lighter consistency that I prefer for on the go.

As you can probably tell by now, I can never have too much moisturizer in my routine. For warmer seasons I turn to a thinner lotion, that’s where everyone’s hand and body lotion comes in. It has a base of water and walnut oil. coco, and it spreads easily and absorbs quickly. Despite the inclusion of coconut oil, it doesn’t feel greasy like some lotions do, and the large pump bottle is great for sitting by the bathroom sink after showering or washing up. hands. If you’re choosing between my two lotion recommendations, go with this one for on-the-go hydration and Burt’s Bees for post-shower hydration.

7. Sun Bum Refreshing Aloe Vera Gel

Keep a bottle of Sun Bum Cool Down aloe vera gel handy for flare-ups.

My secret to calming skin during a flare-up is aloe gel. I’ve used some from an aloe plant at a friend’s house, a cheap low end gel and this Sun Bum Aloe Vera gel. Aloe is known for its soothing qualities and it helps calm the burning and itching sensation of the skin in a way that lotion does not always achieve. While most people can use it in the warmer months as a reaction to a sunburn, I recommend having a bottle year-round to give your skin some TLC whenever it’s dry and dry. inflamed. Sun Bum’s is my favorite because of its cool, refreshing scent.

8. BioRegenerate Rosehip Universal Face Oil

I add extra moisture to my skin with Rosehip BioRegenerate Universal Face Oil.

During the drier times of the year, whether it’s windy, wintry weather or excessive air conditioning, I like to apply face oil to my skin after moisturizer. This rosehip oil states that it is ideal for “dry, mature, blemish-prone, combination and particularly sensitive” skin types. In addition to oil, this includes squalane to help provide moisture and combat dry patches.

9. Wild Origins Body Butter

When I need a thicker moisturizer, I use Wild Origins Body Butter.

Body butters are made for an extra dose of hydration, and this herbal body butter has changed my skin for the better. Its ingredients include coconut oil, shea butter, kaolin clay, ground organic oats, ground calendula, comfrey and rose. The body butter hydrates the skin and calms the redness, a combination I love before bed so I don’t feel itchy when I try to sleep. I use this thick body butter on rough areas like elbows, ankles, knees and feet. But, it’s also gentle enough to use on my face – a win for when I want to protect against chapping on windy days.

10. Vagus Nerve Oil Natural Perfume Roll-On

Vagus Nerve Oil Natural Perfume Roll-On is an oil rather than an astringent.

Many perfume formulas and their applicators make my skin jiggle, especially if they require extra rubbing on my skin. I use this vagus oil almost daily because the scent is lavender and arborvitae, and the consistency is smooth and oil-like as opposed to drying and astringent. The perfume has an earthy lavender scent, and it helps me feel anxious or stressed. The smooth rolling ball of the roll-on applicator glides over my skin without causing irritation and leaves just enough scent that I don’t have to rub it into my skin.
